Department Faculty and Staff Visit Wooded Island

On September 14th a few members of the Department visited Jackson Park's beautiful Wooded Island for a community service/team building activity. They were led by Jerry Levy, Dr. Stulberg's stepdad an the volunteer steward for the island.

The island is currently undergoing a habitat restoration. Jerry led the team on a tour of the island painting a visual of what it would have looked like during the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition when American landscape architect, Frederick Olmsted had designed the island as a respite for people to escape the masses. A recent addition to the island is Yoko Ono's lotus-shaped sculpture "Skylanding".

After the tour the group rolled up their sleeves and got to work thinning out invasive plants to help foster the growth of some more desired species.

2016 Extra-Curricular Culinary Medicine Project

It's hard to believe that our second 4 session 2016 Extra-Curricular Culinary Medicine Project came to a close on July 18, 2016!

During 4 wonderful and packed classes, we were able to teach culinary medicine: the art of cooking combined with nutritional science, with the goal of preventing and treating illness.

The fundamentals of the Mediterranean Diet, DASH diet, differences between plant and animal proteins, and creation of healthy kid-friendly meals were taught by a group of multi-disciplinary faculty: Dr. Geeta Maker-Clark, Dr. Sonia Oyola, Chef Renee Zonka and Chef Richard Crump to a group of very enthusiastic 1st year Pritzker medical students! We are thankful to the students for their participation, terrific cooking skills and interest in cooking and eating with us. Also extremely thankful to KAMII for allowing us to use their great teaching kitchen and gathering spaces, the Department of Family Medicine and the Unversity of Chicago Women's Board for their support! This revolutionary way of teaching has gained steam here at UofC , and we are proud to have more future doctors better versed in counseling, cooking and self care.

Message from the Chairman

Bernard Ewigman

The department began operations in September of 2002 and has a required family medicine clerkship, faculty practicing in federally qualified health centers, an active research program, key roles in The University of Chicago Urban Health Initiative and Institute for Translational Medicine and a family medicine residency program at our major affiliate, NorthShore University Health System.

In the years since our founding, the department has become an active partner in our community, working to enhance the access, quality, and safety of primary health care in southwest Chicago and near suburbs. We place clinical faculty in local practices, collaborate with health systems and practices on implementation and outcomes research, and actively participate in the "community of scholars" that characterizes The University of Chicago.

Each of us in the department loves being at the University of Chicago. It is an extraordinary place with extraordinary people, and the opportunities for intellectual stimulation, collegial work across disciplines, and community partnerships seem unlimited. Read more...
