Welcome from Program Director:

Welcome to the University of Chicago NorthShore Family Medicine Residency.   Our mission is to develop compassionate, culturally competent Family Physicians who are team leaders in the provision of continuous, patient-centered, comprehensive, cost-conscious health care for individuals, families and communities and who advocate for vulnerable populations and understand the social determinants of health. We meet our goals through recruitment of residents and faculty that share our commitment to patients, to our community and to each other.

Our program supports 18 remarkable residents in a 3-year non-traditional family medicine residency. Our curriculum supports “clinic first” with 2 X 2 schedule with 2 weeks in clinic alternating with inpatient family medicine and other sub-specialty rotation experiences.  We are located in Evanston, Illinois a north suburb of Chicago and our clinical site, Erie Family Health Center Evanston/Skokie is a federally qualified health center providing care to patients of all ages, from all nationalities with a wide variety of medical needs including acute and chronic care management as well as office based procedures.

The residency promotes individualized educational programming to meet the needs of each resident. We feature dedicated didactic sessions given by residents, residency faculty and subspecialty colleagues to provide broad, comprehensive training in preparation for practice and board examination. We offer six elective blocks and opportunities to participate in specialty tracks in our strength areas of Sports Medicine, Integrative Medicine, Women’s Health, Obesity Medicine, Faculty Development and Urban Underserved Medicine.   Residents are encouraged to develop their own electives that better meet their career goals including local, national and international elective experiences.

Our faculty are nationally and internationally known for their work in the areas of Advocacy, Quality Improvement, Integrative Medicine, Sports Medicine, Geriatrics, Biomedical Ethics, Inpatient Medicine and Faculty Development. We have a full-time Family Medicine Hospitalist supervising our inpatient experience with a day and night float resident system for coverage which allows our residents time for study and personal wellness.

Residents are integral to the administration of the residency. Opportunities for leadership are ample and residents are invited to participate on Wellness Committee and Recruitment Committee. Every resident takes a leadership role and serves as Educational Chair, Inpatient Chief, Outpatient Chief, Recruitment Chair, or Administrative Chief during their training. The residency promotes political involvement and advocacy through participation in the Spring into  action each May giving the resident opportunity to meet with their state congressman and representatives and support efforts that meet the health needs of the state.

I invite you to take a closer look at our website and we look forward to meeting you.
