Our novel curriculum was launched during the 2019-2020 academic year as part of the Family Medicine Innovation in Continuity Clinical Experience (FM-NICCE) Pilot. This unique curriculum design features two weeks of family medicine clinic in every 1-month block during the second and third years of training, allowing for a much richer outpatient experience and minimizing interruptions to inpatient and specialty rotations.

Other highlights of our curriculum include:

Scholarship

Our curriculum teaches excellence in evidence-based medicine and critical appraisal skills, allowing each resident to achieve a publication during residency.

Help Desk Answers: Residents work with a faculty mentor to formulate a patient-oriented question and then research and write an evidence summary for FPIN’s Help Desk Answers.

Quality Improvement: Through our longitudinal performance improvement curriculum, residents are encouraged to participate in quality improvement projects.

Scholarship Day: An annual event highlighting resident and faculty research and quality improvement projects.

Electives

We offer a wide range of electives for second- and third-year residents – if not offered, residents can also work with our faculty create an elective. If residents are particularly interested in an area, they can choose to do a specialty track in that field to gain even more experience.

Procedure Training

Family Medicine residents develop broad experiences in a variety of procedures.  In addition to procedure training on rotations such as Surgery, Gynecology, Labor & Delivery, Dermatology, and Emergency Medicine, we have dedicated procedure training at our primary care clinic.

Outpatient Procedure Clinic – Half days at Erie clinic with Dr. Mustafa Alavi full of outpatient procedures – everything from biopsies to LARCs to vasectomies! Each resident does 3-5 of these over the course of their training. Many routine procedures can also be scheduled during our usual clinic time.

Musculoskeletal Clinic – Half days at Erie clinic with Dr. Priya Nagarajan specific to patients with musculoskeletal concerns – a great way to practice physical exams and joint injections! Each resident does 3-5 of these over the course of their training.

Additional Training – Residents interested in additional procedure-specific training can select electives or specialty tracks such as Women’s Health and Sports Medicine.
